It is a farewell that we say today - a Farewell intertwined with cherished memories

For the past 60 years, Union Institute & University (UNION) has been dedicated to serving adult students. It has worked to engage, enlighten, and empower students to a lifetime of service, with a philosophy rooted in social connectedness, social justice, and social responsibility. UNION is a unique institution, guided by a forward-looking vision from its founders: to graduate adult students who will make a difference and transform themselves and their communities.

After more than 60 years of operation, the university has faced significant challenges caused by the aftermath of the pandemic. The Board of Trustees of Union Institute & University has made the difficult decision to close the university on June 30, 2024. As a result, UNION has chosen to voluntarily withdraw its accreditation with the Higher Learning Commission. These actions ensure that all students who have attended our “university without walls” will retain their credits or degrees from an accredited institution. Despite the closure, UNION is proud of the opportunities it has provided to its students over the years.

As this transition occurs, students should be aware that transcripts will be available indefinitely. For now, transcripts can be obtained by clicking here. In the future, a contracted agency will manage this link to ensure that transcripts are always accessible to everyone.

John Steinbeck once wrote the following line in his acclaimed novel The Grapes of Wrath: “Goodbye is short and final. Farewell has the sweet smell of reluctance.” It is a farewell that we say today; a farewell intertwined with cherished memories and significant influence.

Continue UNION’s vision by making a difference in the world. Transform yourself and your community to build a better place. That is how true change is achieved.

Farewell!
