Counseling during pregnancy or soon after birth includes encouraging mothers and their families to start a nurturing, caring, and responsive relationship with their infant. Feeding decisions at this time may be shaped by experiences, contexts and various influences around them, as well as having short- and long-term consequences. Breastfeeding counseling at this time aims to enable a positive and loving environment in which the neonate can thrive

Parents and caregivers need access to appropriate help when they have concerns about feeding. This may be particularly important in the first few weeks after birth when breastfeeding is being established, and during potential changes in their situation (such as the mother’s return to school or work), when they may have concerns about maintaining breastfeeding, according to their individual circumstance. An assessment of breastfeeding effectiveness may be valuable in reassuring parents and addressing issues around feeding

With Union's 8-week format and six start dates each year, you can complete your online B.S. in Maternal Child Health: Human Lactation in less time than you would by attending classes on a traditional campus.

Union Institute & University is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC).  When selecting a college or university and before committing any money, it is important to determine whether or not the institution is “accredited.” This is even more important when considering a non-traditional form of instruction, such as distance learning.

Accreditation is important because it creates a set of quality standards for all educational institutions. It also provides access to federal and state funding, maintains private sector confidence, and makes transferring credits easier. Aiming to ensure the accountability of schools and degree programs, accreditation boosts public trust and confidence. When an institution or degree program is properly accredited, you are able to gauge its overall quality without having to conduct a detailed analysis on your own.
