Student Spotlight: Allyson McDaniel, CMHC Student

1. What do you plan to do with your degree?

I plan to use my Master’s in Clinical Mental Health Counseling to help as many people as I can reach throughout my lifetime. I feel as though this degree in particular gives me the flexibility to be helpful in many different arenas from crisis intervention to consulting. Whether I work with individuals, groups or organizations and communities, this degree will leave me with the expertise I need to effect change for the better.

2. What led you to this program?

I began as an Equine Science Pre-Vet Med student out of high school, but soon realized that was not for me. As I looked around to see what my options were I fell in love with psychology and the endeavor of understanding human nature. I could think of no cause as noble as becoming a helper who could assist others toward wellbeing.

3. Why did you choose Union for your studies?

I was interested in the field and looking to complete my Bachelor’s when I found Union’s CMHC program. I was delighted with the ease at which I was able to apply and transfer credits to Union. From the very first call I have received personalized attention and been given every opportunity to make my time here successful. Union really understands adult learners.

4. If you could give a piece of advice to your 20 something, what would it be?

Keep Going! At twenty something I was being diagnosed with a chronic disease and having trouble finishing my studies. I took a break to learn to manage my health. When I began to consider going back to school I was very nervous. Making the choice to come back to school, and to do so with Union, has been one of the best decisions of my life and came at the right time. So my advice to any twenty something would be to keep going and follow your own path.

5. Who has influenced you the most in your life, and how have they influenced you?

There are two women who have made the largest impression on my life. One is my mother who taught me to never give up, even when taking time off to deal with obstacles. She, more than anyone else in my life, has taught me the power of persistence. The other woman in my life is my partner. For years now she has been the one to remind me I am stronger than I think. It was my partner who asked the question, “So, why haven’t you called yet?” At that moment I made the call to Union and began my journey. She has stayed by my side throughout my time here and has been my biggest cheerleader. Without her support, I wouldn’t have made it this far. Thank you, mom and Ellen, if you’re reading this. Without you I wouldn’t be here succeeding and moving forward.
