Learning and Connection: A recap of Union’s 2017 Ph.D. residency

The 2017 Ph.D. residency was a noteworthy week of learning and connection filled with collaboration, creativity, and innovation.

The residency opened on Sunday, July 2 with the powerful social justice presentation “Environmental Justice In A Divided World: Voices from the Global South” given by faculty member Dr. Daniel Ogbaharya.

The week included a moving remembrance of Dr. James Henderson in A Tribute to Dr. Henderson hosted by President Sublett and the student governance committee. The beloved faculty member, who passed away earlier this year, was memorialized for his keen intellect and passion for students.

Other featured events included:

○ New Student dinner with Provost Dr. Nelson Soto that welcomed in Cohort 23

○ Two Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. presentations by students, Pride: In the Name of Love by Jennifer Kramer-Wine, and a capstone named The Influence of Nonviolent Persistent Agitation on Healthcare Governance by Tina Wilkins

○ Women & Power Hour with Dr. Diane Allerdyce, Program Chair

○ Leadership Panel Discussion in honor of Dr. James Henderson moderated by Dr. Stewart Burns

○ Open Mic Night hosted by the Student Governance Committee

○ Doctoral alumni breakfast

○ Dance social

○ and a Cohort 18 Celebration Breakfast to end the week!

Ph.D. residency is about the students and their pursuit to seek academic programs to engage, enlighten, and empower them in a lifetime of learning, service, and social responsibility. Residencies allow students to come together for inspiration from fellow students, guidance from faculty, and motivation that fills the air all week as they inch closer towards earning their doctorate.

Mary Amos, UI&U Senior Application Administrator, one of the many UI&U staff who make residency the success that it is said, “My favorite part of residency is having the opportunity to meet our new students and see firsthand the comradery and intellectual pursuit from our returning students. The cohort model at Union promotes unity, caring and support among our students.

Shay McFarland, Residency Coordinator, sums up the experience this way. “The Union Institute & University residency is special. It is planned with the student in mind. Our goal is to provide students with an exceptional experience in their educational journey.”

Ph.D. residency weeks are held twice a year, January and July. All doctoral students are required to attend the residencies.
