Dr. Tom Frederick serves as the Interim Vice President of Academic Affairs at the Union Institute & University. His service to Union has spanned a spectrum starting from working as an affiliate professor and then progressing through to serving as an advisor, part-time faculty, full-time faculty, Chair of General Education, and Interim Executive Director.  He has taught in the undergraduate, Master’s, and Ed.D. programs.  He is currently the national Chairperson for General Education.  Current courses taught include EDU 704 Current Issues in K-12, EDU 705 Current Issues in Higher Education, GWRI 101 The Writer Within, in addition to other Education and English Literature courses as needed.

He worked for the School Board of Miami-Dade County, Florida for forty years as a teacher, assistant principal, and principal. During the last thirty-two years of his public school career, he was a school administrator, serving as the instructional leader at numerous elementary and secondary schools. He was the 2005 “Assistant Principal of the Year” for the Miami-Dade County Public Schools, the fourth-largest school system in the United States. He was also named a “Heavy Hitter in Education” by the South Florida Business Journal in March of 2005. Frederick retired from his public school career in 2014.

Frederick has made numerous presentations at national and international conferences on the topics of using technology to enhance instruction, using data to drive classroom instruction, and engaging in family literacy. The following presentations have particular relevance to this presentation. Dr. Frederick holds a BA in English Education from Biscayne College (1974), an MS in Educational Administration and Supervision from Barry College (1976), and Ed.S. and Ed.D degrees in Educational Administration and Supervision from Florida Atlantic University (1980 & 1982).
