My certificates improve the ramification of substance abuse in addicted populations

Hermenia Canty-Wilson just completed her Master of Arts in Clinical Mental Health Counseling, in addition to embedding certificates in Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counseling and Cannabis Studies.

“The benefit of earning certificates in Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counseling and Cannabis Studies was an opportunity for me to enhance my Master of Arts degree. The certificates allowed me to expand my training and knowledge, which provided me with the skill set needed to help individuals with substance abuse problems manage their addiction,” Canty-Wilson said.

She wants to be able to educate the addicted population she works with.

“When I work with people I want to be able to steer them in the right direction so that they will be able to recognize the fundamental causes of their addiction,” Canty-Wilson said. “I want to assist them in seeking treatment in their recovery process, and to heal and be able to live their best life.”

Canty-Wilson describes herself as a woman of “Grit & Grace” who has been able to persevere in all circumstances.

“I have always had a passion to help others who didn’t know how or what to do to help themselves because of certain stereotypes and stigmas surrounding mental health. My journey to graduate school started two years ago, after receiving my undergraduate degree in Psychology from the University of Cincinnati in 2018. My journey to commit has been tumultuous and challenging but has prepared me in achieving growth on a high level of being uniquely qualified so that I will be successful in society and make a change for those individuals who have been less fortunate when dealing with their mental health struggles. Many times I questioned if I made the right decision, and wanted to give up. Through it all, I wore my pain, my suffering, my grief, my laughs, and my chaotic emotions, with beauty. Because I love beauty, I now live for the beauty of my own reality to never grow old. It was when I envisioned the end result, my drive and innate desire to be able to study in a field that I so loved, pushed me through to complete my degree,” Canty-Wilson explained.

She believes the hard work has been worth the journey.

“These certificates will help me in my career. They are relevant to working in a therapeutic environment with individuals who are addicted.  Obtaining the certificates in Alcohol and Substance Abuse and Cannabis Studies is proof that I have a bona fide understanding in my field of work and will show my abilities to future employers,” Canty-Wilson said.
