50th Anniversary Celebration in Brattleboro

Join us for Union Institute & University’s 50th anniversary celebration on Friday, September 19, 2014,  5 – 7:00 p.m. at the Brattleboro Museum & Art Center at 10 Vernon Street. This event is free but online reservations are requested. Click here to register.

“Vermont has a special place in the history of Union Institute & University. In 1964, ten college presidents met at Goddard College in Plainfield, Vermont, to form a consortium, The Union for Research and Experimentation in Higher Education (UREHE) that eventually became Union Institute & University,” said Union Institute & University President Roger H. Sublett. “Although the name changed, the mission has remained the same—to provide innovative higher education alternatives to working adults that acknowledge students’ prior knowledge and experiences.”

Union Institute & University pioneered many of the concepts now common in higher education.

“In 1964, distance learning, innovative and flexible models of instruction, adult learners’ prior knowledge and experiences were revolutionary ideas in education,” said Dr. Sublett. “Union has led the way in approaches to education for adult students.Today Union Institute & University enrollment stands at 2,000 students, with more than 15,000 alumni worldwide spanning from New England to Florida and California, anchored by its headquarters in Cincinnati and serving students from every state and across the globe.”

The public is invited to help mark the milestone by bringing a small item, anything from the last 50 years, to contribute to the university’s time capsule. The only request is to attach a note explaining the object’s significance, so it can be identified when the capsule is opened in 2064. The event will also feature hors d’oeuvres, cash bar, and exhibitions at the Brattleboro Museum & Art Center.
