Make A Difference – New Graduate Certificate in Leadership in Public Service Launches Fall 2018
Union Institute & University (UI&U) in conjunction with the Martin Luther King, Jr. Freedom Center in Oakland, CA will launch a graduate certificate program in Fall 2018 focused on public service leadership. The Certificate in Leadership in Public Service (CLPS) is an interdisciplinary program providing professionals with an ethical framework to apply the principles of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s nonviolence to public service within one’s career, job site, and in representing one’s agency in interaction with the public.
The Certificate in Leadership in Public Service is geared toward leaders who aspire to or currently serve in administrative roles within their organization.
Dr. Elden Golden, one of the administrators behind the program at UI&U noted, “The certificate is designed for the ‘transformational leader’; it is for those who want to make a difference, as well as being knowledgeable leaders.”
Key program benefits include a fully online structure, dedicated faculty from both partner organizations, and transfer credit capability towards the Master of Arts Online program at UI&U.
Executive Director for the Martin Luther King Jr. Freedom Center and the Institute for Community Leadership, Dr. Roy Wilson added, “Leaders who excel in Certificate in Leadership in Public Service are seeking solutions to obstacles that hamper public service agencies from better representing the interests of both the community and individuals. Public servants are much more than vendors who provide products and services; they are the partners between themselves and those they serve.”
The partnership highlights boundless collaboration between two organizations with key missions aligned to the purpose of public service within leadership.
Class starts August 27, 2018. The 18 credit hour Certificate in Leadership in Public Service is designed to be completed in one year. The coursework is fully online and is offered as a stand-alone certificate or embedded in the MA program, with concentrations in Creativity Studies; Health & Wellness; History & Culture, Leadership, Public Policy, Social Issues; and Literature & Writing.
