Salute To Our Veterans – Elementary Teaching Is Next

November is an opportune time to salute our veterans. Today’s spotlight is on 1SG Bruce L Reges USA Ret. and Ph.D. student with a major in Educational Studies. Bruce’s goal is to involve more men in elementary school teaching. Learn why in the Q&A below.

Q: What do you plan to do with your degree?
A: I plan to work in education. I hope I can be a force for social justice and more male involvement in elementary school instruction. Too many times, I have worked in elementary schools where I was literally the only male there on a consistent basis. Everyone including the support staff were all females. I feel a balance is needed of positive male influence.

Q: What led you to this program?
A:
After I retired from the military, I found that the best way to continue my education was through a program like Union where I could work at home, and in that way work in my VA appointments with my academic schedule.

Q: Why did you choose Union for your studies?
A: My VA doctor graduated from Union, and so did my master’s degree advisor. They both thought Union would be a good fit for me.

Q: If you could give a piece of advice to your 20 something, what would it be?
A: Serving others always rewards you in ways that you cannot see at the time. However, you will look back with satisfaction on what you have done in your life.

Q: Who has influenced you the most in your life, and how have they influenced you?
A: I lived in a kibbutz in Israel. A kibbutz is a collective community dedicated to helping each other. The friends I met were trying to achieve a better world, and they inspired my life of selfless service.

Union is proud to be a Yellow Ribbon university. We understand the unique needs of our veteran students and provide exceptional one-to-one guidance and various financial services just for you. Click below to learn more.
