Congratulations on your retirement Dr. Anu Mitra!

Today, we bid a heartfelt and appreciative farewell to Dr. Anu Mitra, who is retiring after an incredible 35 years of dedicated service with Union Institute & University. It is with deep gratitude that we reflect on the contributions Dr. Mitra has made throughout her tenure, leaving an indelible mark on our institution and the countless lives she has touched.

Dr. Mitra’s unwavering commitment to education and her passion for empowering students has been nothing short of inspiring. Her expertise and guidance have shaped the minds of generations of learners, instilling in them a love for knowledge and a drive for success.

As we take a moment to reflect on her remarkable career, we wanted to share some heartfelt words from Dr. Mitra herself about her time at Union. Her gratitude and appreciation for the university and its community are truly inspiring.

“I have been at Union since January 1988. During this time, I worked in many administrative capacities and transitioned into a faculty role in the 1990s and have been here ever since. I plan to continue as an adjunct in the near future, seeing three of my Ph.D. students through the dissertation process.

What makes Union special for me are the students that I have met, my colleagues at Union, the staff, and the administration. Everyone has a unique story to tell—how they came to Union, and what their motivations were. The students, in particular, continue to be top of the class. It’s been a miraculous event—each and every time—to see their voices come into focus, to see them take charge of their lives and do remarkable things in the world. I am humbled to play a minor part in their transformation!

Also, to add to the specialness of Union, the fact that Union students bring their vast reserves of experience and knowledge to their formal education at Union. I have tended to learn as much from the student as I may have taught them…and it’s been such a privilege!

Next steps for me: I am either on the advisory board or a trustee or a docent at four museums. I plan to immerse myself in this world, curate exhibitions and become more knowledgeable about the museum studies field. On a good day, you will likely find me in a museum or an arts organization or decoding street art somewhere in the world.”

Dr. Tom Frederick, Union’s Vice President for Financial Affairs congratulates Dr. Anu Mitra on her upcoming retirement.

“Throughout her career, Dr. Mitra has amassed numerous honors, including a Fulbright Scholarship, a Gopman Grant, and the Union Institute & University’s Certificate of Distinction for Excellence in Scholarship. She has published extensively. She will be missed by students and colleagues.”

As we say goodbye to Dr. Anu Mitra, we extend our heartfelt thanks for her tireless efforts and invaluable contributions throughout her tenure with us. We are truly grateful for the lasting impact she has made on our institution and wish her all the happiness and fulfillment that retirement brings.
